Raw Berry Smoothie

RECIPE #386, DAY #564

FOUR STARS

ORIGINAL RECIPE: “A Berry Delicious Drink” from Elysa Markowitz in The Complete Book of Raw Food*

TIMING: 5 minutes

DIFFICULTY: Easy

TOOLS: A blender

COOK TYPE: None

HEALTH: Even though eating raw is not something I will condone doing all the time (like the creators of this cookbook), this is a very lean, antioxidant rick snack or meal accompaniment. I would totally eat this for breakfast too, alone, but it has like no protein.

img_0531EXPERIENCE: This seemed like a really easy smoothie to whip up for breakfast, but it ended up failing in two ways. First, it had no staying power: no protein or even grains. Second, it was too darn cold out to enjoy a freezy, raw berry smoothie. Duh. I could have known this in advance.

However, for the summer, this will be a nice treat.

img_0530NOTES: You can soak the dates so that they will smooth out in the drink and just provide a little sweetness. We actually preferred them chunky, like little surprised of sweetness as we drank.

***

  1. In a blender, place 2 frozen bananas, 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup frozen raspberries, and 6 pitted dates. Add 2 cups orange juice and puree until smooth. You may have to add more juice to blend completely.

***

Serve on a hot summer day as an afternoon treat.

LEFTOVER IDEAS: Smoothies–especially icy ones–are horrible left over. Drink all of this and then immediately rinse out your blender, cups, and straws.
