RECIPE #407, DAY #574
ORIGINAL RECIPE: Just a verbal recipe given to me from a friend about 15 years ago*
TIMING: 10 minutes
DIFFICULTY: Easy, at least if you have a popcorn maker like I do
TOOLS: Popcorn popper
COOK TYPE: Popcorn popper
HEALTH: Popcorn is a great, healthy snack. It’s easy to make at home and it’s a definite go-to for us. If you want to really be good about it, use coconut oil, but probably not with this combination.
EXPERIENCE: We have been making popcorn on a regular basis for 15 years. We also have been making this particular combination for 14 years. We used to hang out a lot in our first year of marriage with another couple, and–with our limited resources–we spent a lot of time with Blockbuster movies which we had to watch lined up on the end of our bed. One night, Justin made us this family-secret popcorn, and there was no going back.
NOTES: I think that dry basil might have been a part of the original recipe that got lost over the years. You could try it out.
We use an electric popcorn popper. Like one from the 80s that we found at a garage sale. We will never part with it.
- Pop a giant bowl of popcorn according to your device’s instructions.
- Melt 4-6 tablespoons unsalted butter.
- Drizzle 1/3rd of the butter over the popcorn, then sprinkle with salt, cayenne pepper, grated Parmesan, and garlic powder. Toss the popcorn and repeat with 1/3rd butter and the flavorings. Do 1 last time and then taste for everything.
Serve with a family movie and frosty bottles of root beer.
LEFTOVER IDEAS: Popcorn goes south rather rapidly, but you can seal it up and munch on it for a couple days; it’ll just be sub-par. It’s very hard for us to keep popcorn for more than 20 minutes because we are so good at stuffing it in our faces.
