With a Bang

Let’s be fair: I stated from the beginning that this blog was mainly for my own record-keeping (so that I can one day write a cookbook or ten), and I never went looking for followers. But since you’re here, I will  announce to you that after another two years at it, I have to take another sabbatical of unidentified length from the food blog. Why? Mainly because I am transitioning from doing virtual school with my son to homeschooling. I have a week left to finalize his curriculum for the year, make schedules, read what I can of the last two books I bought about homeschooling, go school shopping, and organize the school room. After that, I imagine my blog time will quickly evaporate into lesson planning and science experiments.

Also, because I have been convinced that some moms do homeschool and work, I am determined to focus any non-school energy on my current writing project. That means that cooking, entertaining, decorating, and even hobbies will have to take a step back while time with my family will take a leap forward. Cleaning and laundry? Eh, who needs it?

Also also, when my computer broke a couple months ago, I fell into a quagmire of back-listed recipes, lost photos, and even a corrupted file. Seems like a good time not to play catch-up.

Actually, I took a little field trip to the library two days ago and spent most of my day yesterday meal planning for the school year. Yes, the whole school year (although, not every single night; I’m not that crazy). The great experiment for now is batch cooking/freezer storage. Starting next weekend, I will spend Saturday (and every other Saturday thereafter) in the kitchen up to my elbows in stock pots and ground beef, making anywhere from eight to fifteen meals that can be frozen and quickly finished on a school night. The plan is to enter the food in my Freezer Inventory, label it wisely, throw it in the freezer, store non-perishable items in a bin next to the freezer, meal-plan according to what’s in inventory, snag perishables at the grocery store, and keep up the batch-cooking all year long. That’s the plan.

As my parting gift to you, I will include the schedule below. I chose cookbooks that were immediately available to me from the library. There are likely better, but these probably cover the basic freezer-meal gamut.

(Remember, I am cooking every other week, not every. Meals generally with be served over the following month-two months. Also, while I’m in the kitchen batch cooking, I might also whip up a few of these things: cake, cupcakes, pie, bread, cookies, bars, quick bread, granola, pancakes, waffles, breakfast casserole, sticky buns, breakfast sammies, parfait, popsicles, popcorn, hummus, or muffins.
