Liverwurst Sandwich

2016-05-19 12.12.35RECIPE #244, DAY #333

FOUR STARS

ORIGINAL RECIPE: There wasn’t one needed

TIMING: 5 minutes

DIFFICULTY: Easy

TOOLS: Nothing special at all

COOK TYPE: None

HEALTH: As for lunch, you could do better and you could do worse. I don’t add any veggies to this sandwich because I honestly like it best just the way it says here. On the other hand, liver is really good for you, and if you buy a premium product you’ll be all good. Also, you want to choose your bread and condiments wisely.

EXPERIENCE: If you don’t like liverwurst, you won’t like this. But if you like liverwurst, this combination is likely to take you back to the kitchen counter in your grandpa’s houses where grandpa doled out the old-fashioned meats with the smell of cigarette smoke, the squawk of the CB, and very few words. Okay, maybe that’s just me…

The ketchup does provide a nice counter-point for the strong liver flavor.

NOTES: Other ways to take your liverwurst sandwich could include very thin-sliced raw onion or even pickled onion. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to add some very neutral lettuce, like bib, green leaf, romaine, or iceberg.

Turkey liverwurst is an option.

***

  1. Set out 2 slices of soft, white bread. (A halved soft roll would work.) Spread one slice with mayonnaise, then drizzle with ketchup.
  2. Pile the other piece of bread with medium-thickness slices of liverwurst. Put the halves together and enjoy.

Serve with a pile of plain chips and a dill pickle.
